Three Core Elements of Screw Air Compressor Installation
Release time:
2025-08-28
Installing a screw air compressor is not just about placing the machine and turning it on — proper installation directly impacts performance, efficiency, and service life. To achieve safe, stable, and energy-efficient operation, three key factors must be considered: environment & foundation, piping & system design, and commissioning & protection.
1. Environment & Foundation
Proper site selection determines the lifespan of your compressor. An ideal compressor room must be dry, well-ventilated, and dust-free.
-
Space layout
Maintain at least 1.5m clearance between the compressor and walls, and 2m between multiple units. A ceiling clearance of ≥4m ensures smooth airflow for cooling.-
If the ambient temperature exceeds 40℃, install industrial exhaust fans or air conditioning.
-
If the temperature drops below 0℃, use electric heating to prevent pipeline freezing.
-
-
Contamination control
Keep the compressor away from dusty workshops or pickling areas. The air inlet should be raised 2m above the roof and equipped with a triple-stage pre-filter (coarse filter precision ≤50μm). In chemical environments, use stainless steel piping for corrosion resistance. -
Foundation requirements
A reinforced concrete base should withstand 2× the maximum loaded weight of the compressor, with a leveling tolerance of ≤2mm/m.-
Screw compressors should be mounted on anti-vibration rubber pads (≥10mm thick).
-
Reciprocating compressors require spring shock absorbers, secured with foundation bolts (e.g., M16 bolts tightened to 80–100 N·m).
-
-
Vibration control
After installation, use a 0.02mm/m precision level gauge to check horizontal alignment. Longitudinal and transverse deviation should not exceed 0.5mm/m, and elevation differences between multiple units should be within ±3mm to avoid pipeline stress.
2. Piping & System Design
The layout of the piping system directly affects air pressure stability and energy efficiency.
-
Air intake piping
Keep it short, straight, and smooth. The pipe diameter should be larger than the compressor inlet (e.g., for DN50, use DN65). Minimize bends (prefer 45° elbows) and maintain a pressure drop of ≤0.01 MPa. -
Air discharge piping
Slope towards the air receiver at a ratio of 1:100 to prevent condensate backflow.-
Flange joints: use high-pressure rubber-asbestos gaskets (≥1.6 MPa).
-
Threaded joints: wrap with PTFE tape (3–5 clockwise turns).
-
-
Post-treatment equipment sequence (must not be changed):
Air compressor → Aftercooler → Moisture separator → Air receiver → Dryer → Precision filter.
Maintain ≥1.2m spacing between equipment. The dryer should be installed horizontally, while precision filters must be vertical with the arrow aligned to airflow. The drain port must be higher than downstream piping. -
Electrical safety
-
Power supply fluctuation: ≤±10%.
-
Cable selection: rated current ×1.5 (e.g., 75kW motor requires 35mm² copper cable).
-
Grounding: adopt TN-S system, resistance ≤4Ω. Do not share with lightning protection grounding.
-
Control cables: shielded and routed separately from power cables (≥300mm apart). Sensors must be installed away from vibration sources (e.g., pressure sensors mounted ≥10m away on a stable pipe section).
-
3. Commissioning & Protection
Before startup, check the following five items:
-
Lubricating oil level: between ½–⅔ of the sight glass.
-
Belt tension: slack of 10–15mm.
-
Remove all pipeline blind plates, plugs, and desiccant bags.
-
Confirm cooling water valve status (for water-cooled units).
-
Ensure high-temperature parts (>80℃) are fitted with protective covers.
-
Install safety devices on the air receiver:
-
Safety valve (set at 1.1× working pressure)
-
Pressure gauge (accuracy: grade 1.6).
-
Trial operation:
-
Run unloaded to confirm motor rotation.
-
After 30 minutes, check vibration levels:
-
Screw compressor ≤6.3mm/s
-
Reciprocating compressor ≤11.2mm/s
-
-
Under load, verify:
-
Discharge temperature: ≤100℃ (oil-injected screw)
-
Pressure fluctuation: ≤±0.02 MPa
-
Pipeline leaks: check with soap water.
-
Mandatory safety requirements:
-
Protective fence ≥1.2m around the compressor.
-
Rotating parts must have protective covers (mesh ≤50×50mm).
-
Emergency stop button must be red mushroom-head type, mounted at 1.5–1.8m height, connected to an independent hardwired circuit.
