Understanding Air Compressor Model Parameters: Starting with “Air Delivery” and “Pressure”
CHANUN Air Compressor
In a factory workshop, an air compressor is as vital as the heart to the human body. However, many people are puzzled by the numbers and letters on compressor model plates. In fact, by understanding just two key parameters — air delivery and pressure — you can decode most compressor models and build a solid foundation for proper selection and use.
01. Air Delivery: The “Blood Supply Capacity” of a Compressor
Air delivery refers to the volume of air discharged by the compressor per unit of time, usually measured in m³/min (cubic meters per minute). It represents how much compressed air the machine can produce per minute at its rated discharge pressure — directly determining the compressor’s air supply capability.
For example, a compressor labeled 3.8 m³/min means it can deliver 3.8 cubic meters of compressed air per minute (converted under inlet conditions). Note that higher air delivery isn’t always better — it must match your actual air consumption. Generally, it’s recommended to select a compressor with an air delivery about 10% higher than your actual requirement to handle peak demand.
A small workshop may only need 1–3 m³/min, while a large factory may require 10 m³/min or more. Choosing a compressor with excessive capacity will only waste investment and energy.
02. Pressure: The “Power Strength” of Compressed Air
Pressure indicates the force of the compressed air discharged by the compressor, typically expressed in bar, MPa, or kg/cm² (1 bar ≈ 0.1 MPa ≈ 1 kg/cm²).
According to national standards, the discharge pressure of general-purpose air compressors is 0.7 MPa (about 7 bar). Pressure should be determined based on the requirements of the pneumatic tools or equipment in use. Excessive pressure increases energy consumption and equipment wear, while insufficient pressure can cause tools to malfunction.
For instance, a compressor labeled 0.8 MPa means it can provide compressed air at about 8 bar. In certain industries such as petrochemical or aerospace, high-pressure compressors may be needed — exceeding 3 MPa, and sometimes reaching 40 MPa.
03. Decoding the “Hidden Codes” in Model Numbers
Each manufacturer uses its own naming conventions, but most models include both air deliveryand pressure information.
For example, in CHANUN’s model “C5EF2-1PH/220V/50HZ-8bar”:
• C stands for CHANUN,
• 5 refers to horsepower,
• EF2 indicates the model type,
• 1PH/220V/50HZ specifies phase, voltage, and frequency,
• 8 bar represents the working pressure.
Understanding these model codes helps you quickly identify key performance data and select the most suitable compressor.
04. The Relationship Between Parameters
Air delivery and pressure are closely linked. With the same motor power, increasing the pressure will generally decrease the air delivery.
For example, a 22 kW compressor delivers 3.8 m³/min at 7 bar, but when pressure rises to 8 bar, the air delivery may drop to 3.6 m³/min. Therefore, when choosing a compressor, both parameters must be considered together to ensure adequate air supply without wasting energy.
05. Practical Tips for Model Selection
In real-world selection, besides air delivery and pressure, consider the application environmentand working conditions:
• For narrow spaces (such as onboard or vehicle-mounted use), choose a vertical type.
• For applications with long air transmission distances (over 500 m), consider a mobile compressor.
You should also pay attention to the quality of compressed air required. Some applications demand oil-free and moisture-free air, which may require additional equipment and careful model selection.
Tip: The key principles for selecting compressors are economy, reliability, and safety. Always verify the manufacturer’s Compressor Production License and Pressure Vessel Production License — certified manufacturers generally have complete quality assurance systems.
